Somali Government is committed to promote equality of opportunity between disable persons and other persons

Mogadishu, 07 August 2017 – HE Abdirahman Omar Osman (Eng. Yarisow), Minister of Information, Culture & Toursim today met representatives of the Disability Group to discuss best ways to promoting and raising public awareness to the public on the plight of disability people.

Minister Eng. Yarisow thanked participants of today’s meeting and assured to disability groups that the Federal Government of Somalia is committed to promote equality of opportunity between disabled persons and other persons, to eliminate discrimination, harassment of disabled persons that is related to their disabilities. The FGS is also committed to promote positive attitudes towards disabled persons and to encourage participation by disabled persons in public life.

Minister Eng. Yarisow stressed the importance of disable people to challenge any forms of discrimination as the government is willing to support in this regard. We need to do more on public awareness campaigns to show public the positive image of disabled people and the need for all segments of the society to sympathize the plight of disable people.

Minister Eng. Yarisow finally stated the the FGS is working hard to finalizing the necessary legislations to promote disability groups’ needs. The Ministry of Women & Human Rights aims to encourage that when appointing national committees and other senior positions that disable people should be given a consideration. And now the Ministry of Information will begin public awareness programs aimed at promoting disable people’s rights.
