The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has appointed a new Burundian commander, General Diomede Ndegeya, who arrived in Mogadishu on Sunday.
Diomede Ndegeya replaces General Tigabu Yilma of Ethiopia, whose term ends as AMISOM Force Commander in January 2019.
“I came to help Africa, to help Somalia, to help our brothers. I have been here several times before, from 2007 to 2012, ”said General Diomede Ndegeya after landing at Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport.
Ndegeya, 57, served in Somalia between 2007 and 2009 as a member of the Burundian contingent in the Somali operation.
Prior to his appointment as AMISOM’s new commander, General Diomede Ndegeya served as an advisor to the Burundian Ministry of Defense, in charge of political and diplomatic affairs.
He holds a Master’s degree in Science and Technology and has received military strategic training in Russia, China and France.
