Pakistan: Troops attacked a Pakistani military official in the northwest region near the Afghan border, killing two soldiers during a shootout, the military said in a statement.
The Pakistani military media said on Saturday night that soldiers had stormed a base in the Datta Khel area of the Northern Waziristan region in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This area has been a military base.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
At the time of the shooting, two soldiers had been killed, soldiers said, adding that a search was under way to locate the militants. It did not disclose the identity of the attackers.
North Waziristan has been operating as a safe haven for militants until the military launched a major offensive. That forced the soldiers to flee across the border into Afghanistan or to hide in other mountainous areas near the border. However, militants often target security forces.
Pakistan is holding talks with Muslim militants known as Pakistani Taliban with the help of the Taliban government in Afghanistan. There is a temporary suspension.
