Heavy fighting broke out this morning at a Somali government military base in Daynunay after a heavy attack by Al-Shabab militants, security sources told VOA.
Heavy weapons were used in the fighting, and security reports indicate that al-Shabaab militants entered the base in the early hours of the morning, although government forces later reinforced government forces and recaptured the base.
At least five soldiers were killed in the attack, including an army commander. Three soldiers were reportedly killed in a landmine explosion as they made their way to the base.
Security officials say they have inflicted heavy casualties on al-Shabaab and no details have been released
Daynunay is a military base 1KM from Baidoa, the capital of Bay region. Al-Shabaab militants have attacked Daynunay base several times in the past.
