In Karlsruhe, authorities said on Twitter that they had sealed off the area because of the ambiguity of the threat.
When asked how long the operation had been going on or how many hostages there were, the spokesperson who answered the phone gave no information.

On Thursday, a gunman opened fire inside a Hamburg meeting hall frequented by Jehovah’s Witnesses, killing two people and possibly taking others hostage.
