RABAT: Moroccan police confiscated 5.4 tons of cannabis resin hidden in a truck bound for Spain, as well as 60 kilograms of cocaine wrapped in frozen tuna, according to security officials.

The cannabis resin was confiscated by security and customs authorities in Tangier’s northern port “on board an international freight truck,” according to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) late Saturday.
The resin blocks were pressed into plates that were inserted into specifically designed cavities, including those in the truck’s chassis. The Moroccan driver, 45, was apprehended.

In a second operation, police said roughly 60 kg of cocaine were confiscated inside a refrigerated container on Thursday in Tangier.

The cocaine was packaged in tuna labeled Ecuador and bound for Spain.

According to the United Nations, Morocco is the world’s top producer of cannabis resin, with police seizing roughly 100 tons last year.

In recent years, police have also made numerous major cocaine seizures, with South American cartels exploiting the North African country as a smuggling transit point for Europe.
